Cairo, a Hub of Euro-Mediterranean Innovation : Highlights from the EU–South MED Matchmaking Event – TechDays Cairo 2025
Published on 07 August 2025
From June 16 to 18, 2025, Cairo hosted a strategic gathering at the crossroads of industry, innovation, and regional cooperation : the EU–South MED Matchmaking Event – TechDays Cairo 2025. Funded by DG MENA and co-organized by ANIMA, the European Cluster Collaboration Platform (ECCP), Federation of Egyptian Industries (FEI) & Enterprise Europe Network, the event was part of the Euromed Clusters Forward project. It brought together clusters, SMEs, and institutions from 13 countries, aiming to build lasting bridges between Europe and the Southern Mediterranean.
A Collective Dynamic Driven by Collaboration
Held alongside the Big 5 Construct Egypt and Egypt Infrastructure & Water Expo trade shows, the matchmaking event began with a plenary session filled with powerful messages. Key speakers included Mariella Masselink and Giacomo Bogo (European Commission), Khaled Abdel Azim (FEI), Martina Bacova (Enterprise Europe Network), and Sarra Boussaïdi, our representative from ANIMA.
All highlighted the strategic role of clusters as agents of industrial transformation and drivers of sustainable transition.
“Today, we are not just networking. We are building bridges between Europe and South Med” said Mariella Masselink from the European Commission.
Sarra Boussaïdi presented the Cluster Business Connect call for projects, which proved to be a key catalyst for exchanges throughout the event. This call provided a clear and mobilizing direction for the B2B meetings, encouraging participants to develop collaborative projects to strengthen regional value chains between Europe and the Southern Mediterranean.

Fostering Euro-Mediterranean Synergies for Cooperation and Partnerships
The event brought together 37 participants from both shores of the Mediterranean, who took part in 81 bilateral meetings, some of which were organized spontaneously — a clear sign of the vibrant exchanges taking place. A pitch session allowed each delegation to present its skills, needs, and ambitions before engaging in tailored discussions, many of which held strong potential.
Some participants established up to 11 strategic connections, and nearly a dozen organizations identified real prospects for collaboration. Among the most promising partnerships were :
- Iconic Cluster (Romania) & ENR Cluster (Morocco)
- Valbiom Cluster (Morocco) & Technology Enabled Construction Cluster (Romania)
- Descartes Développement et Innovation (France) & Egypt4Industry (Egypt)
These emerging synergies led to joint responses to the Cluster Business Connect call for projects, under the Euromed Clusters Forward program. The goal : to develop robust Euro-Mediterranean value chains, while boosting technological and commercial cooperation among regional clusters. Several consortia formed during the Cairo event have already been selected for funding, underlining the relevance and impact of the initiative.
“Every visit, every B2B meeting, as well as the TechDays events themselves, stood out for their high quality and strong impact.”
— Abdelmalek Amri, Industrial Director of Tunisie Transformateur and member of the Mecatronic Tunisia Cluster

Immersion in Egypt’s Innovation and Industry Ecosystem
Beyond the meetings, participants had the opportunity to explore Egypt’s innovation landscape through several field visits :
- At Nile University, the focus was on applied research and startups.
- At the FEI, discussions revolved around industrial development, business support services, and inter-cluster cooperation.
- At the Entrepreneurship Center – Smart Village, part of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport (AAST), conversations highlighted sustainability challenges in the construction and water sectors.
These immersions deepened mutual understanding and reinforced the relevance of the emerging partnerships.

Valuable Exchanges, Praised Organization
According to the post-event survey, participants expressed high satisfaction with:
- The organization and relevance of the TechDays (90% satisfaction rate)
- The usefulness of B2B meetings (also with a 90% satisfaction rate)
The professionalism of the ANIMA and FEI teams received widespread praise in qualitative feedback, with an impressive average rating of 4.9 out of 5.
While some attendees noted the event’s intense schedule, all recognized the strategic value of the targeted professional exchanges.
“Each visit, each discussion strengthened our shared vision. Now it’s time to turn that into concrete action.”
— Abdelmalek Amri, Mecatronic Tunisia Cluster

Conclusion : A Tangible Launchpad for Sustainable Euro-Mediterranean Partnerships
The EU–South MED Matchmaking Event – TechDays Cairo 2025 went far beyond the simple exchange of business cards. It sparked discussions, inspired ideas, and opened doors. Most importantly, it confirmed that when it comes to sustainable innovation and industrial cooperation, dialogue between Europe and the Southern Mediterranean remains highly relevant — and full of concrete opportunities.
Beyond the projects initiated and the connections made, the TechDays served as a reminder of a fundamental truth : meeting face-to-face, engaging in dialogue, and building mutual trust are essential steps toward solid, lasting partnerships. Trust, born from direct interaction, is the foundation upon which ambitious collaborative projects can be built.
Far from being an endpoint, the TechDays in Cairo marked a starting point — the beginning of a collective dynamic serving more integrated, resilient, and sustainable Euro-Mediterranean value chains.
