SUCCESS STORIES : Sustainability and Innovation: The Role of Cluster Valbiom Morocco in Euro-Mediterranean Cooperation
Published on 12 June 2025
Introduction
Specializing in waste and biomass recovery, Cluster Valbiom Morocco is rapidly establishing itself as a key platform for public-private dialogue and a catalyst for innovative local initiatives driven by diverse stakeholders—industries, research institutes, universities, start-ups, and companies. Today, the cluster brings together over 150 members united by a common goal: fostering collaborative projects that create a supportive environment for sustainable economic development in Morocco.
Recognizing the strategic importance of waste and biomass valorization in Morocco’s environmental policy, Cluster Valbiom Maroc leverages the combined expertise of political and scientific actors to develop tailored “Master Plans” for each region. These plans identify key players and spotlight cutting-edge research, paving the way for a strong, coordinated approach to unlocking the economic potential of these vital resources.

The Euromed Clusters Forward project, aiming to foster cooperation between Mediterranean shores, provided a valuable framework for Cluster Valbiom Maroc to engage in a vibrant and diverse network of stakeholders. By participating in ten project activities, including numerous training courses and collaborative missions, the cluster strengthened its capacities and broadened its partnerships in sustainable innovation across the Mediterranean.
For Zakaria Madani, Directeur général of Cluster Valbiom Maroc, the Euromed Clusters Forward project is invaluable as it provides access to a vibrant and diverse network of stakeholders. Highlighting the crucial role of interaction among participants, he strongly encourages active involvement in the project’s various events.
Challenge
Cluster Valbiom Maroc faced the challenge of expanding its network, increasing international visibility, and enhancing internal competencies to effectively contribute to sustainable innovation and economic development.
Another key challenge was the need to equip members with knowledge and tools related to Industry 4.0, digital transformation, and strategic marketing to remain competitive in the evolving global landscape.
Solution
To overcome these challenges, Cluster Valbiom Maroc actively engaged in various activities within the Euromed Clusters Forward project:
International Missions and Networking
The cluster took part in missions and summits in Malta and Cyprus, including the Euromed Clusters Forward Summit and the Innovation for the Planet Forum. These events enabled the cluster to initiate collaborations with international clusters, such as Spain’s AMEC network and a Tunisian eco-construction cluster.
Cross-Border Collaborations
Participation in events such as TechDays in Marrakech and the ICT Academy in Amman allowed the cluster to explore tools, methodologies, and best practices from peers in similar sectors, sparking new ideas and revealing areas for internal growth.
Capacity Building through Training
Through the online “Connecting Clusters and Industry 4.0” Academy, organized by ANIMA and led by Team Henri Fabre, the cluster participated in three workshops focused on marketing and digital transformation. These workshops provided concrete tools and strategies to boost competitiveness and transition toward Industry 4.0.
Results

The actions undertaken yielded several concrete outcomes:
Expanded International Network
Cluster Valbiom Maroc established new strategic partnerships, including participation in the Barcelona Agri-Food Trade Fair and a collaborative study trip with a Tunisian cluster.
Improved Strategic Vision
Through training and workshops, the cluster refined its strategic approach, identified new development avenues, and laid the groundwork for future sustainable actions.
Enhanced Capabilities
Exposure to international best practices and Industry 4.0 tools empowered the cluster and its members to become more competitive and innovative.
Catalyst for Regional Cooperation
The cluster’s involvement in cross-border exchanges significantly contributed to regional innovation dynamics, fostering long-term cooperation and collective growth across the Mediterranean.
